Great Start for VIU Basketball

November 7th, 2010

Two solid wins for the VIU Men's basketball team to start the season.

Comments by Head Coach of the VIU Men's Basketball team TONY BRYCE.
I thought the boys came out ready to play both days jumping out to substantial leads that Quest was never able to overcome. Henry Bui did a brilliant job working the bench in my absence, and our veteran leadership was evident.

In Friday's 76-55 win, it was all about the 1st quarter. I thought we were very average after that. We will need to work on consistency to ensure we don't let teams back in games.  Andrew Kaban was a handful with 26 points and 7 boards, while Mike Wohlers had a solid first half leading to 15 points on the night.  Point Guard Jacob Thom did a great job of cleaning the glass leading the team with 11 boards.

In Saturday's win I thought we were much better.  Our defence was very stingy. By no means are we the most athletic group in this league, therefore our team defence and smarts will be critical.  I thought we did a pretty nice job as a unit on the defensive end in Saturday's 88-45 win.  Kaban was a beast once again, going for 30 and 7, and his teammates did a great job of getting him the basketball.  However, this game was very much a solid all around effort, with ever active player getting 15 minutes of action.  Jacob Thom was all over the floor again today scoring 11 points including a thunderous dunk (and one) right on a Quest player.  Dakota Russell and Harrison Stupich both did a very nice job off the bench, going for 11 and 8 respectively.

Next weekend, Douglas College is in town.  Our goal is to improve each week, and we will need to be better and more consistent next weekend if hope to have success.

The women's team also won both weekend games over Quest 61-48 and 55-39 ..more details to come.
