Two great starts helped lead to a couple convincing wins this weekend over Douglas College at VIU gymnasium.

In Friday nights victory, the Mariners put on a bit of an offensive clinic with every player on sheet scoring at least 4 points.  The final was 115-68 as the M's fell one point short of tying the school record of 116. Jacob Thom was outstanding and got the Mariners off to a great start as we jumped out to a 35-17 lead after one quarter.  Jacob had 20 points and 6 assists at the half, with the score 54-32 at the half.  Playing limited minutes in the second half he finished with 22 points and 8 assists.  Andrew Kaban and Mike Wohlers led the Mariners with 23 point each, while Tyler Olsen also had a solid night with 11 points and 5 boards.  The guys put up an impressive 61 in the second half and it was pretty to watch as they were very unselfish and everyone was involved.

On Saturday, the game was not as clean but the Mariners came out with a 100-80 victory.  Again the Mariners were a handful offensively with Kaban going for 33, Thom 22, and Wohlers 19.  Jess Black was solid off the bench, chipping in with 9. Jacob Thom also added 6 rebounds, 9 assists and 5 steals. The game was not as pretty as the night before and the Mariners will need to do a much better job on the defensive end of the floor this coming weekend against a very potent Unbc attack. Should be a couple great battles between two very good basketball teams up in Prince George.

Two good team wins this weekend at home vs Douglas.  We had the chance to play a lot of people this weekend and our bench was outstanding.  In particular I thought the trio of Shayna Worthington, Alix Stupich and Jodi Mitchell were terrific off the bench for us.  Our benches play this weekend allowed us to rest many of our starters which was huge since we have a big road trip to UNBC next weekend.  I think this weekend gave some people valuable minutes which built their confidence.

Player of the week ....

Shayna Worthington

Shayna had a big weekend for us in two wins over Douglas College.  on Friday, in limited minutes, Shayna had 12 points and 8 rebounds in a 68-27 win.  On Saturday, in 25 minutes, Shayna had 26 points and 7 rebounds.  Shayna was very active in both games causing problems for Douglas around the basket.
