Athlete of the week

November 15th, 2010

Lindsay McLoughlin is in her 5th and final year at Vancouver Island University. This 5’11” Campbell River girl played a key role in VIU’s dominating play this past weekend as VIU made road trip to the Lower Mainland to face off against the Douglas Royals and Capilano Blues. Friday night was an easier match for the Mariners taking the hometown Douglas Royals out in 3 straight. McLoughlin, although being played sparingly in all three sets, recorded 9 kills, 1 block and one ace for a total of 11 offensive points. Defensively she chipped in 8 digs. Saturday night, things were much different for the Mariner’s taking on a very strong opponent and Provincial rival, Capilano University. McLoughlin led the Mariners in offensive points tallying up 15 kills and 1 block for a total of 16 kills with only 1 hitting error in the match. Defensively she was rock solid with 10 digs and a passing percentage of 2.65. She was the reason the Mariner’s handled the Blues in 3 straight sets.

Next up for the Mariners is a lone match on Saturday night vs the two defending National Champions, UBC Okanagan Heat. The last time VIU played UBCO in a league or playoff match, the date was March 13, 2010 in the CCAA National Championships Semi-Finals. UBCO would win that match 3-0 on their way to their 2nd National Title.
