The Mariners ended the first half with a pair of wins on the road. Playing a very determined Langara squad, the M's came home with an 85-68 victory on the Friday, followed by a 81-53 victory on the Saturday.
Friday night the Mariners got off to a shaky start and the Langara Falcons were clicking on all cylinders. Battling some early foul trouble, the Mariners had to battle to keep it close and trailed 39-37 at the half. The team had been challenged as Langara was keen to pull of the upset. However, it was not to be as the Mariners locked down defensively and ran away in the second half for the victory. Andrew Kaban was solid with 26 and 9 boards, as was Jacob Thom with 22 and 9 boards. Mike Wohlers had a nice all around game with 12 points, 6 boards and 8 assists. Very impressed with our answer to the challenge in the second half...not so impressed with our start both mentally and physically.
Saturday was a different story as the boys came to play and jumped out to an early 26-6 lead. The second quarter Langara tried to junk it up a little defensively which helped them cut the lead to 14 at the half. The Mariners adjusted and where able to attack all defences in the second half, leading to the lopsided victory. It was an all around solid team win, with several guys contributing in a variety of ways. Jacob Thom was himself with 12 points, 10 boards and 6 assists. A balanced attack however, as Kaban had 19, Tyler Olsen 12, Joel Schat 11, and Patrick McCarthy with 10.
