Lee Hamilton of the men's Volleyball team and Kayla Gromme of the women's basketball team both received athlete of the week recognition from the league !!
Lee is one of the most offensive middles in the conference, if not the nation. After a lot of work this summer, Lee has come back fitter than ever and ready to make his stamp on the league. This weekend during a double header with COTR, Lee presented some very impressive stats. In seven sets Lee had a hitting efficiency of .750 (24 kills), 5 stuff blocks, and 4 digs. Not only did Lee have a dominating weekend, but with his presence at the net, VIU's outside hitters were able to contribute with a hitting efficiency of .300.
Kayla is a second year player from Saltspring Island. Last season she was the BCCAA Rookie of the Year and a first team league all-star. This year she has settled in as our point guard and has flourished in her role as the teams primary ballhandler and playmaker. Kayla is so unselfish and makes everyone around her better. This passed weekend Kayla led VIU to two very tough wins at Langara. On Friday, Kayla scored 13 points, 4 steals and 4 assists in a 53-40 win over Langara. On Saturday, Kayla went for half of VIU's points, 20 in all, in a 40-38 win over Langara. Kayla continues to make big shots for us when needed while continuing to involve her teammates at all times. "I was extremely happy to see Kayla assert herself more offensively, taking big shots when needed"comments Coach Bill McWhinnie
