VIU Badminton in Hawaii

January 2nd, 2011

Honolulu Open 2011 was a great event with 75+ competitors from BC, Alberta and NWT plus another 50+ from Hawaiian Islands and mainland USA.  The level of play was very strong with many close 3 game matches right from the first round of the tournament.   BC teams dominated the finals and VIU players had strong results. Mike Clark who is assistant coaching with the Mariners this year finished bronze in Mens singles and mixed doubles and took the Gold medal with Jensen Ly of Kwantlen University in a very tight 3 game final against  Simon Wu and Willis Kwee of Kwantlen.  Jenny Aronson was bronze in womens singles after a grueling semi-final against the local favourite from Honolulu as well as silver in the A consolation womens doubles.  Other results from VIU team include:  Bryan Cassels and Jenny Aronson - gold in A consolation mixed doubles, Bryan Cassels and Zack Yim - gold in B mens doubles, Zack Yim and Sue Eng (Calgary) - silver in B mixed doubles, Pat Thompson and Chris Harris were semi-finalists in B doubles, Chris and Jordan Bartulabac also semi-finalists in C mixed doubles, Stanley Hou was silver in the C mens singles and gold in C mens doubles, Jordan and Darby Walker were bronze in the C womens doubles.

While enjoying the island of Oahu the team found time to cross train on the beaches at Waikiki and the North Shore. Next weekend many members of the squad will be competing at the Campbell River Open and then Jan 15-16 Mariners are hosting the last qualifying tournament of the season.  Feb 12-13 is BC Provincial Championships at Douglas College.
