All VIU Weekend

January 16th, 2011

Whenever VIU and Camosun get together it is a close game and Saturday night was no different.  Camosun jumped out to a 26-12 first quarter lead taking advantage of a very nervous VIU team.  After settling down in the second quarter, VIU managed to out score Camosun 15-5 to cut the lead to 31-27 at the half.  The 3rd quarter was back and forth with Camosun leading 46-40 going into the 4th.  The see-saw affair continued with VIU managing to squeek out a 58-54 win.

Kayla Gromme led VIU with 21 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists.
Sarah Fraser had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
After getting in foul trouble and having to sit most of the first half, Brittany Knievel was big for us in the second half getting 8 rebounds and a couple of huge scores inside late in the game.

"This was a very big win for us.  Camosun is a very well coached team that plays very hard.  Mentally the win was huge as this is the first time any of our current players have defeated Camosun in a league game.  I hope this win will alleviate the pressure they have previously felt when playing Camosun and we can use this win as a building block for the remainder of our season"

Next up for VIU is a trip to Abbotsford to take on the CBC Bearcats.

Camosun Chargers kept it close early in the game with some great outside shooting from Blake Mansbridge, but the M's surged ahead early in the 3rd and never looked back...winning 84-61.  More details to come.
