84-61 win for Men's Basketball

January 17th, 2011

The Mariners were able to use a better second half to pull off a 84-61 win over rival Camosun. Full credit to Camo who really battled tonight and shot the ball exceptionally well (13/25 from beyond the arc).

Jacob Thom was outstanding for the Mariners, who were without backup point guard Clayton Billett, and the leagues leading scorer Andrew Kaban.  Thom was all over the floor finishing with 24 points, 8 boards, 6 assists, and 7 steals.  The bigs both chipped in as Patrick McCarthy finished with 13 and 9, while fellow big Tyler Olsen added 10 and 12.  However, I thought Joel Schat was outstanding, playing within himself all night, going perfect from the floor, and finishing with 10.

For whatever reason, we lacked urgency tonight and took a lot of possessions off especially on the defensive end. I don't know if it was nerves due to the large crowd, or we think we're good enough to just roll out and go through the motions.  Either way it needs to be corrected.  I thought as a group we played soft physically, a couple guys were selfish at times, and mentally we forgot our identity. This can not happen if we hope to attain our goals in the second half and playoffs.
