Mariners defeat the Heat
Comments by Head Coach

It was far from a pretty weekend of basketball, but the Mariner's were able to escape with a pair of victories over the UBC-O Heat.

Friday night the M's jumped out to a solid 42-23 lead at the half and were able to hold on for a 77-70. The Heat put up a serious fight and took advantage of poor decision making, and a lack of mental focus in the second half by the Mariners. Both teams were fighting illness, and it was evident at times during the game.  Andrew Kaban (Dover Bay, Nanaimo) returned to form as he returns from injury, finishing with 24 point. Despite not feeling well Jacob Thom (PRSS, Prince Rupert) hung tough, putting up 17 and 9 boards.  Tyler Olsen (Mark Isfeld, Fanny Bay) also had a nice all around game for the M's, with 12 points and 8 boards.

Saturday night the M's were ripe for the picking. We really struggled to find any sort of offensive rhythm and lacked energy for a good part of the night. Trailing at the half (33-29) and by as many as 8 at one point in the second half, the M's were able to escape with a 68-60 win. Not impressed with our performance, but the boys did a good job of attacking in transition and pounding the ball inside late in the second half...playing VIU basketball. They were rewarded with good looks and free throws. UBC-O plays a much different game, relying heavily on the perimeter game and 3's (61 attempts on the weekend), and they struggled to knock it in late only scoring 10 in the 4th.Andrew Kaban (Dover Bay, Nanaimo) had 21 points, while Mike Wohlers (Gresham, Oregan)  added 19.  Tyler Olsen (Mark Isfeld, Fanny Bay)  was the leading rebounder with 10.
