VIU women silver and men 4th

A 5 set marathon loss (25-27, 25-19, 25-21, 20-25, 15-7) to UBC Okanagan Heat has VIU going to nationals as a wildcard entry. 
Dani Smith of the Mariners was named VIU Player of the Match, finishing with a match-high 55 assists along with an impressive 15 digs.

Lindsay McLoughlin, Dani Smith and  Shenise Power were named tournament All-Stars !!

VIU men faced Douglas College Royals in the Bronze medal which went the distance again,unfortunately VIU could not respond in the fifth  (15-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-18, 15-9).
Leftside hitter Joe Holder was named Player of the Match for VIU, finishing with team-high 15 kills and 8 digs.

VIU holds off Capilano in 5 set marathon, move on to Provincial Final

The Vancouver Island University Mariners got off to a hot start on Friday afternoon, winning the first 2 sets 25-21 and 25-18. However, the Capilano University Blues gave them a run for their money, winning the 3rd and 4th sets 26-24 and 25-21, respectively. Ultimately the Mariners eked out the win in the 5th set 15-9, taking the match 3 sets to 2 (25-21, 25-18, 24-26, 21-25, 15-9).

  VIU's Lindsay McLoughlin, a 5th Power Hitter from Campbell River, BC received Player of the Match honors for the Mariners, tallying an impressive 21 kills and 15 digs.

The Mariners will play for Provincial gold on Saturday at 6 PM against the winner of the Friday night semi-final matchup between the UBC Heat and UFV Cascades.

MARINERS EKE OUT 5th SET WIN !!

The 4th seeded Vancouver Island University Mariners dispatched the 5th seeded College of the Rockies Avalanche Thursday night in the Quarterfinals of the BCCAA Volleyball Provincial Championships 3 sets to 2 (25-22, 25-17, 22-25, 15-12).

Though down in a 2-0 hole against the Avalanche, the Mariners found a way to rally themselves to an impressive comeback win in the 3rd set, followed by the series tying win in the 4th, throwing the match into a final, deciding set. The Mariners’ momentum eventually carried them through to the win in the 5th set 15-12.

BCCAA men’s volleyball Rookie of the Year Rylan Brouwer was named VIU’s Player of the Match, finishing with team-highs of 15 kills and 13 digs. Rookie Outside Hitter Jeremias Guenter of the Avalanche was named his team’s Player of the Match with 7 kills and 4 blocks.

The offense between the two teams was neck and neck all match long, but it was the effort on defense that brought the Mariners storming back into the match after being down 2 sets to 0. The Mariners notched 62 digs over 5 sets compared to COTR’s 54. 4th year setter Brett Weninger and 5th year setter Ryan Thibault took turns orchestrating VIU’s offense, tallying 27 and 20 assists, respectively. Setter Dan Metcalf of COTR led the match with 47 assists en-route to the team’s 55 kills.

The Mariners advance to a semi-final matchup with the UBC Okanagan Heat Friday night at 8:00 pm.
