Basketball Battle

August 28th, 2011

VIU Men's basketball had a pretty solid performance this past Saturday night.  The Mariners put NCAA Div. III Whitman to the test, eventually falling behind late and losing 91-78.   The game was back and forth for most of the night with Whitman up 46-43 at the half.  However, Whitman was able to create some turnovers and knock in some shots late to come away with the victory.

VIU was led by the backcourt trio of veteran Jacob Thom,  and newcomers Brandon Jones, and Richard Townsend Gant.  Townsend Gant led the way with 21, while Jones chipped in 20, and Thom added 13.  "All around however, I was much more pleased with our effort in comparison to our battle with Ball State. I thought tonight we pushed back", states coach Bryce.  "Considering the fact we were missing some size due to injury, have not really practiced as a group and just went out and played, I am pleased we were able to put a scare into them.  We have quite a few new faces in the mix this year, but I am excited for the start of practice and to see what this group is able to accomplish this season", adds Bryce.
