Men open with 3-1 victory

September 11th, 2011

The VIU Mariners came away with a 3-1 win over a very skilled Capilano Blues team and gained their first 3 points of the early season. Capilano came out strong and put pressure on the Mariners over the first 15 minutes; Thomas Arnoff put Capilano up 1-0 on a close range shot. The goal turned out to be a wake up call for the Mariners and they started to put their game back on track ,midfielder Matt Mehrassa was instrumental in VIU’s first goal. Matt’s long throw-in skipped off a defenders head and gave the Mariners the goal they needed to put them even with Capilano.Team captain Jared Stephens scored 31 minutes in then again at the 33 minute mark , both goals Jared was slipped in alone on the keeper and made no mistakes. Midfielders AJ Kambere and Chris Arnett collected assists on Jared Stephens’s goals.

The 2nd half was back and forth with Jared Stephens, Chris Arnett and Matt Mehrassa all unlucky not to put the Mariners up by a couple more goals. The Mariners defensive team, lead by Ben Leggett was struck a blow when Leggett was red carded for a missed tackle, but the Mariners managed to keep their composure and adjusted to playing with ten men. The Mariners were full marks for there win with other players of note ,midfielders Dan Cato and Romaie Martin turned in great performances as did 2nd half substitute Andres Algarin coming of the bench for Cato.

1st yr right back Kevan Brown was voted hard working player of the game and Mariners captain Jared Stephens once again showed he will be some one to watch this 2011 season..

Scott Brown played the full 90 minutes for the VIU Mariners.
