Golfers on the move

September 25th, 2011

VIU Golf started slowly this season with a 609 score in the first event of the year at The Dunes in Kamloops.  High winds and low temperatures made scoring conditions difficult and the players weren't able to adjust.  Low Mariner for the event was Matt Cella with a 72-78 = 150 placing 16th overall for the individual competition.

Tournament #2 at Okanagan Golf Club and a bounce back tournament was needed for the entire roster.  Showing some early nerves and some hot weather lead to some early bogies placing VIU behind the eight ball a little further.  Starting on the back nine of the first day things started to fall into place.  Matt Haddad made his first birdie of the fall and played under par golf for the rest of the tournament.  Both Kristian and Matt Cella continued to play strong golf helping move the Mariners up the leaderboard.  As a result a 296 score was posted after the first round.  The second round produced an even better result as Matt Haddad posted his first under par round in Mariner colors, a 71.  Added to Kristian's birdie - birdie finish on 17 & 18 to finish at even par 72.  VIU was off to a good start on round two.  Both Matt Cella & Tyson Lemon finished with 74's and a team total of 291.  A score Mariner golf hasn't seen since 2009.

VIU Golf finished with 587 and a third place finish.  A nice improvement from the 6th place finish after the first tournament.

Next weekend tournament #3 hosted by Camosun College at the Bear Mountain Resort.  Another strong performance is needed to play our way back into nationals contention.
