Six point weekend

October 2nd, 2011

Dan Young-Mercer helped lead the VIU Mariners soccer team to two big wins over the past weekend, Saturday the Mariners defeated TRU 1-0 and then on Sunday they beat UBCO 1-0. Mercer was in goal for both victories, coming up with big saves to collect back to back shutouts.

Saturday’s game was a very fast and some times physical game but both teams had a lot to play for and the referee let the players decide the game; fouls were called but cards where not thrown around. The first half the Mariners came out strong and created some very good scoring opportunities, AJ Kambere, Davis Stupich and Stephen Ewashko all were unlucky not to get the Mariners up in the first half. Dan Cato and Ben Leggett did a great job of shutting down the TRU attack and the times they did get in on goal Dan Mercer was there to make a save. The first half ended 0-0 with neither team looking like they where slowing down.

The 2nd half was just as fast but a little wider open with more chances at both ends, TRU made some half time substitutions, bringing in a big striker to try and cause some trouble and maybe draw a penalty but center back Dan Cato did a great job of dealing with everything that came his way. AJ Kambere finally put the Mariners on the score board with a great run down the outside and then cut in a cross the top of the 18 yard box and made no mistake low to the keeper’s right. Jared Stephens all most put the Mariners up by two when he went in and around the keeper only to see his shot hit the side netting.

The coaching staff was glad to see the team keep their composure and fight through a good physical game to get the three points they needed to put them selves in to first place. Dan Cato was voted the hard working player of the game by his team mates.

Sunday the Mariners traveled to Kelowna to play a strong UBCO team ,the Mariners new they would be in for a good game as the Heat have over gone a complete over haul. The team has a new coach and a very talented collection of new players. The game was not as physical as their Saturday game but it was played at a very fast pace with both team having some good possession. Right back Kevan Brown and Left Back Brad Archibald both did a good job of getting forward to help the midfielders create some good scoring chance and with Jared Stephens collecting so much attention it freed up other players to get forward. Mariners goal keeper Dan Mercer was called on to make a good save from in close on a hard shot that he managed to get his hands on and tip up over the cross bar. The first half ended the same way their Saturday game did tied at 0-0.

The Mariners put in one of their best 2nd halves, playing the ball around well and working hard to break the tie, it wasn’t till late in the half that their hard work paid off. Matt Mehrassa scored for the Mariners with about 10 minutes left, it was AJ Kambere that broke down the left side and put in a great cross,  Mehrassa was able to get on the end of the rebound and put it away. The final1-0 win put the Mariners 4 points up in their division of the PacWest. Dan Mercer was selected player of the game by his team mates.

The weekend was a great success for the Mariners getting the full six points and some players of note were once again the Mariners back line ,Dan Cato, Ben Leggett, Brad Archibald and top rookie Kevan Brown. Midfielders Chris Arnett and AJ Kambere both had a good weekend also the coaching staff was very pleased to see Kambere starting to get used to the style of play and is contributing to the Mariners success. Kambere missed most of the Mariners training camp but is now starting to be the player they know he is capable of being and will take a lot of pressure off of the Mariners top striker Jared Stephens.
