VIU Women's Soccer

Saturday vs TRU at Kamloops

TRU 3, VIU 1

Sunday vs UBCO at Kelowna

UBCO 3, VIU 1

First place Mariners traveled to the interior for two very important games and came away with two very tough losses, Saturday in Kamloops, TRU scored the opening goal in the 9th minute off a corner kick, VIU keeper Shelby Walker called for the ball but was picked off by a Wolfpack player allowing a free header for a teammate, Mariners came right back and almost scored twice when shots from Mariah Robinson and Jessica Burma were saved by TRU keeper, things would turn for the worst for VIU, center mid Jessie Weninger was tackled from behind and suffered an injury which forced her out of the game in the 20th minute "we had starting mid fielder Caity Genereaux out with an injury already and after losing Jessie so early, we had to move some players around, Jessie was playing her best soccer as a Mariner so it was a big blow"

The score would stay at 1-0 until the 55th minute, TRU would score from a scramble in front of the net to make it 2-0, Burma and Robinson had chances to cut into the lead after being alone in on TRU keeper but were denied, center mid Burma hurt her knee on the play and was forced to leave the game, Robinson would score in the 67th minute to make it 2-1, three minutes later some sloppy defending allowed Wolfpack to score their third, VIU had couple of more quality chances to cut into the lead but shot wide.

Two huge injuries for us in the game really changed things, Jessie and Burms were playing some great soccer, TRU is a good team but once we're healthy we match up very well against them, we get them at home to end the season hopefully we'll be at full strength, the standings are so tight, only four points separating first to last in our pool.

Sunday's game vs UBCO was for first place in Pool B, the host heat came out strong and got a goal in the first minute of play, VIU playing a different formation for the first time to offset the 4-3-3 system applied by the Heat, it took a while for the Mariners to settle in, VIU took over the game in the 25th minute and had number of chances to equalize, Mariah Robinson had the best chance when she hit the post on a breakaway, Heat had couple more shots from long range but posed no threat to VIU keeper Shelby Walker.

In the 55th minute things would change for the second day in a row on a call by the referee, Heat were awarded a PK after VIU defender Sarah Meredith made a brilliant tackle when both Meredith and a Heat player got to the ball at the same time, Meredith went in stronger on the ball and the UBCO player fell down, after a delayed reaction the ref called a PK, The Heat would score to make it 2-0, they would add another one before Emma Johansson with her 5th of the season would reply for the Mariners.

Mariners are now four points behind first place UBCO.

UBCO played a 4-3-3 system with two wingers which leaves a lot of space in the midfield and in behind the defense as their two backs were marking our outside mids, the chances we got were when we exploited that space
