3-1 win for men's soccer

October 9th, 2011

Sat game:

Brant Losch helps lead Mariners to a 3-1 win over Langara Falcons.

Matt Mehrassa put VIU on the board early against Langara College.  Stephen Ewashko played the ball wide to Davis Stupich who put in a good cross that Matt Mehrassa finished well.

Chris Arnett gave the Mariners a 2–0 lead when he barried a Jared Stephens rebound.  Matt Mehrassa started the play with a long throw into Jared, who struck the ball well only to see it blocked by a Langara defender but Arnett ran on and made no mistake.

Jared Stephens was rewarded later in the 1st half for his hard work, Stephens was sent in alone on the Falcons keeper and he put the ball away, to give the Mariners a 3-0 lead going into the 2nd half.  The Mariners were pleased to be going into the 2nd half with the lead after battling with a strong hard working Langara Falcons, if not for the hard work of midfielder Brant Losch and the strength of the Mariners backline, the score line could have been different.

The Mariners were happy to be able to get all their players into the game in the 2nd half.  The team is fortunate to have a very deep and talented bench but with the league being so strong and every game so meaningful the Mariners are limited to how many changes they can make.  Pete McKay, a four year starter and centre back with Sooke Celtics, came off the bench to win balls in the middle of the park for the Mariners, and midfielders Brad Crewe, 2nd year, and Romaie Martin, 3rd year, also came into the game to run at the Falcon backline and their pace continued to cause the Falcon defenders trouble.  The Mariners created some good scoring opportunities but it was Langara that scored the only goal of the 2nd half.  The goal came off a Falcon’s free kick just outside the 18yard box.  Dan Mercer was able to get a hand on it but the ball ended up in the back of the net.

The coaching staff was once again happy with the energy and work rate of the full team.  Brant Losch was given the player of the game by his team mates and coaching staff.
