Badminton Update

October 23rd, 2011

VIU played host to the first PacWest badminton tournament of the 2011-2012 season. While this is a rebuilding year for the Mariner crew, there were some encouraging results. The Mariners struggled in the early rounds of the tournament on Friday night, but there were some highlights in the individual events, and plenty of positive growth from its young crew over the weekend.

The women anchored by Jordan Bartulabac, only a 2nd year student, made huge strides with first year athletes Lucy Bonar and Nicole Greene playing well together in the Womens Doubles, and Lucy pulling of a win in the Womens Singles. First year athlete Julia Kück lead the way with strong performances in both the Womens Singles and paired with 2nd year Bryan Cassels in the Mixed Doubles, providing one of the weekend’s highlight performances for the Mariner team.

The Mariner men also had a strong showing in the individual events. Returning 2nd year player Bryan Cassels, who was part of the 2011 CCAA Nationals B.C. gold medal team, also teamed with 1st year Johnathan Foster in the Mens Doubles event, with Cassels providing mentorship and leadership on the court. 3rd year athlete Pat Thompson gutted out some tough singles matches, as did 1st year player Corentin Denis. Another highlight of the weekend was the inspired play of Thompson and senior Zack Yim in the Mens Doubles, as the men played an exciting  & fast paced style of play, pulling off some good wins for the team.

Other first year players Martin Haaf and Lindsay Ward contributed to the Mariner effort. The coaching staff sees great potential from the play this weekend and the Mariners will continue to work hard building experience and skill before their next tournament the weekend of November 25-26 at Capilano University.
