Victories over Kwantlen and Langara for both our men's and women's basketball teams this past weekend !!

Player of the game ... Men's

Senior forward Patrick McCarthy had his best weekend of the season, helping the VIU Mariners win a pair of hard fought road games at Kwantlen and Langara.

The 6'6" top academic-athlete at VIU was a major factor in both games.  Against a very scrappy Kwantlen team, McCarthy had 18 points on 8/12 shooting from the field.  He also hauled down 6 rebounds in 25 minutes of action.  On Saturday, the Mariners played the talented Langara Falcons in a playoff type battle. McCarthy once again rose to the occasion, with some very timely buckets. In just 25 minutes of action, Patrick once again put up double digits with 11 points and also hauled down 8 rebounds in the win.

"Patrick has been a big part of the rebuild at VIU", states Mariner Head Coach Tony Bryce. "Not just what he brings on the floor, but more so the leadership he brings off the floor, and most importantly in the classroom. He is quality young man, and exemplifies what a student athlete is all about", adds Bryce.

Player of the game ... Women's

Brittany Knievel is a 5th year post from Dover Bay High School in Nanaimo.

After suffering an injury early in the season, Brittany is rounding in to form.  This past weekend on the road at Kwantlen and Langara, Brittany provided us with the inside presence we desperately need to be successful.  On Friday, Brittany had 16 points and 9 rebounds in a 74-38 win against Kwantlen. On Saturday, Brittany scored 22 points and had 9 rebounds in a 64-39 win against Langara.

Brittany continues to get better each week and has been a big reason for our recent success.
