Three PACWEST Athletes of the week go to VIU Mariners!!!

Well done Patrick, Jocelyn and Dani ....

Dani Smith was instrumental in VIU's success this past weekend. Making the road trip to Abbotsford, VIU played a very strong determined CBC squad in back to back matches. On Friday night, CBC pushed the Mariners to 5 sets, winning 3-2 (25-27, 25-17, 18-25, 25-20, 15-12). Smith tallied 5 kills, 2 blocks and 1 ace for 8 offensive points. She also added 13 digs. Sunday night saw the same determined Bearcats push the Mariners, this time in only 4 sets. VIU would win 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 26-24, 25-17) to take weekend matches. Smith would end up with 2 kills, 3 blocks and 12 digs.

VIU clinched 1st place finish in the PACWEST following the weekend result which allowed them to retain their #1 National ranking. The Mariners were able to have a well balanced attack due to the great play of 4th year setter Smith. “Dani placed the ball in near perfect spots for her hitters every time. She chipped in individually with a total of 7 kills, 5 blocks and 25 digs over the course of the weekend. For a setter Dani tallied some very impressive individual stats in a conference that does not include assists. There is no question without the play of Dani Smith the Mariners ability to clinch first place would not have occurred. Dani will be looked at to run the Mariner offence leading into Provincials and Nationals.”

VIU Mariner's senior Patrick McCarthy played his final home game of his career on Saturday night in front of a packed house of family and friends, and he did not disappoint.

The Mariners were able to defeat the talented and potent Unbc Timberwolves 76-71 in a physical battle. One of the main reasons was both the defensive and offensive contributions of their hometown boy.  McCarthy led the M's in scoring with 18 hard earned points, and also hauled down 8 rebounds (4 on the offensive end) in 27 minutes of action. "Both my seniors (Jacob Thom being the other) were brilliant in their final home game. Patrick was a handful on the offensive end, but also did a great job limiting Unbc big man Kevin Madsen on the defensive end of the very proud of them both", according to coach Tony Bryce.
The win against the second place T-Wolves secured first place in the Pacwest for the Mariners, and a first round bye in the playoffs. The M's finish up league play on the road next weekend visting Capilano and Quest.

Jocelyn is a 3rd year guard from Highline Community College in Washington.  This past weekend vs UNBC, Jocelyn was outstanding in a 73-57 win.  Jocelyn shot 11/14 from the field scoring a game high 28 points while adding 4 steals and 3 assists.  Jocelyn continues to provide VIU with scoring in a variety of ways.  "Jocelyn has been our most consistent scorer all season, she can score in a variety of ways and is a difficult matchup." "She has also been terrific defensively and has the ability to get all her teammates involved in the offense"
