Badminton Provincials

February 19th, 2012

The VIU Mariner badminton team took to the courts for the final time this PacWest season for the Provincial Championships held at Thompson Rivers University this past weekend. In what has been a rebuilding year for the team, (with only 4 returning players), the team has worked hard and made some great strides. Highlights of the weekend included a strong performance in the Mixed Doubles, anchored by 3rd year veteran Pat Thompson that resulted in a bronze medal. Partner Jordan Bartulabac stepped up her play, putting the duo into reach for a possible spot at the National championship; however, the two fell short of their bid in a close fought battle.

2nd year player Bryan Cassels also fell short of his bid for a return trip to the National championships, battling out a very tough singles draw, and finishing 4th. Veteran player Zack Yim was a team leader partnering with freshman player Martin Haaf in the Mens Doubles, while freshman pair Nicole Greene and Lucy Bonnar showed their improved play in some tough Womens Doubles contests. Yet another first year player, Lindsay Ward battled hard in the Womens Singles, with all 3 of the women showing huge improvement over the season.

Corentin Denis and John Foster contributed to the team play, with Denis pulling off a big win on the Saturday over Capilano.

With the hard work put in by this year’s freshman and some strong recruits pending for next year, the Mariner badminton team is looking forward to a strong showing next season, and wishes the other Mariner teams the best of luck at their respective upcoming provincial championships!
