The Men's Mariners outlasted a spirited comeback led by the Blues' Mike Zayonc in the fourth quarter to defeat Capilano University 67-57 on Friday at the PacWest provincials.

Patrick McCarthy's team-leading 20 points, followed by Jacob Thom's 18 brought the men within reach of the gold medal today against UNBC, at 8 p.m.

Scoring for Capilano were Michael Steele with 14 and Mike Zayonc with 13 points.

Coach Tony Bryce, who is in his final year as bench boss for the Mariners, said that the win is just the start for a promising Mariners team.

"I think now that we have a game under our belt, we got some nerves out early and we're settled in," Bryce said noting that the men hadn't played much during the break.

"Hopefully that trend continues and we play well tomorrow."

Both seniors, Thom and McCarthy were given full credit for maintaining their poise as the game wore on, Bryce said.

"Their maturity shone through, I thought they both did a very good job," he said.

Brittany Knievel's 17 points helped the Vancouver Island University Mariners move on to the gold medal game today after defeating the Capilano University Blues 59-54 in Vancouver last night.

Shayna Worthington posted 15 points alongside guard Jocelyn Jones, who also had 15 points. Scoring for the Blues were Jenna Ralston with 14 and Hayley Boulier with 13 points.

The Mariners women's team will play the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves at 6 p.m.
