VIU Men’s soccer team wins first two games of the year, 7 goals from 7 different goal scores.

Saturday;VIU traveled to BCIT to play the Langara Falcons and it didn’t take the Mariners long to get on the score board , new recruit Nick Moore scored on a low shot 6 min into the game.

Langara was able to tie the game up 14 minutes later when the Falcons striker was able to strip the ball from a Mariner defender and beat goal keeper Robbie Cochrane.

Then with 5 minutes left in the first half Stephen Ewashko played a good ball in behind the defenders to find Davis Stupich and he made no mistake heading the ball past the Falcons diving keeper.

Second half things went back and forth but it was Chris Merriman at the 75th minute mark that put the Mariners up 3-1, making a run down the left side beating two defenders and finding the back of the net on a great shot that beat the keeper far post.

Langara was not done yet, with 15 minutes left in the game they capitalized on another miscue in the Mariners backline and cut the Mariners lead by one. Then it was Blaze Roberts one minute later,  taking a neat little chip pass from Jordan DeGraaf that  restored the two goal lead.

To make the game interesting goal keeper Robbie Cochrane was called on to make a penalty shot save with almost no time left, after a Falcon strike was taken down in the penalty area.

Sunday; VIU were up in Squamish to take on Quest University and came away with a well earned 3-1 win.  The Mariners had to battle through some adversity in the game but showed great character and received their three points.

Jordan DeGraaf scored ten minutes into the game after Drissa Bouare and Aki Ishimine combined on a one two play and slipped DeGraaf in alone on Quest’s Keeper.

The Mariners were unlucky not to get a couple other goals on some good opportunities but the half ended 1-0 in the Mariners favour.

Second half saw the Mariners come out strong again creating more chances but not finding the back of the net. Then at the 60 min mark the Mariners were forced to play with ten men after a defender was shown a red card. The team continued to show character, if not for a great save by the Quest goal keeper, Nick Moore would have had the Mariners up by two. But it was Quest that scored the next goal on a goal mouth scramble a goal that the Mariners wish they could have back.

One player down and a tie game Mariners were not going to stop, Drissa Bouare was set up by Stephen Ewashko to score 75 minutes in and Stephen Ewashko scored one of his own at the 80th minute mark and the Mariners finished of with their 3 points and a 6 point weekend.

It was a great weekend for a number of players but some players of note were; center backs, (captain) Matt Mehrassa and Dan Cato. Left back, Chris Merriman Midfielders, Aki Ishimine, Jordan DeGraaf and Stephen Ewashko Striker, Drissa Bouare
