GREAT START TO THE SEASON FOR VIU WOMEN'S SOCCER

Sunday, Sept 9th

Final Score: VIU 0, Quest 0

After a big win over Langara on Saturday the Mariners were up against a much improved Quest squad, playing on an artificial turf and a narrow field, VIU gave up a lot of possession in the first 25 minutes to the Kermodes but no real  scoring chances as we kept a compact defense that was tough for Quest to breakdown. VIU adjusted to the fast surface and started to take the game to the home team, Emily Nicholson on a brilliant set play forced the Quest goalie to make a great save in the 30th minute. As the  halftime approached Rachel Jones was fouled just outside the box, Jones quickly picked up the ball and put it down before chipping over top of the keeper and into the net, the ref called it back and explained later that the ball was rolling.

At the Half: VIU 0, Quest 0

In the second half the Mariner's were now fully comfortable with the pitch really poured it on in the second half. The M’s created  chance after chance to take the lead, Rachel Jones twice, Jillian Kelly, Nicholson, Joanna Geck and Jessie Weninger all had Grade A chances but the Quest goalie stood on her head to deny them.

"It took us a while to adjust to the surface but once we did, we created a lot of scoring chances, our final tally in Grade A chances was 10 to 3 for us but their keeper was phenomenal today. We must've had four or five one on ones with their goalie and she stopped them all.  Shelby Walker came up big for us when needed, they cross the ball a lot and she dealt every cross with authority.  We are happy to get 4 points on the road against two tough opponents, now we have to take care of things at home as we play 7 of our next 8 at Mariner Field starting with Kwantlen next Saturday, this year it's going to be a very tight league, lot of good teams"

On Saturday, Sept 8th

Final score: VIU 1, Langara 0

VIU started the game slowly and gave up possession to the Falcons but not any clear scoring chances, Mariner's found their legs and almost took the lead when Rachel Jones was sent on a breakaway by Sharin Kang pass, the Langara keeper made a brilliant save on Jones who almost put the rebound in but shot wide, Jones again was sent in one on one with keeper from a Mariah Robinson through ball but again the keeper denied her.

Halftime

At the Half : VIU 0, Langara 0

Mariner's came out with lots of energy to start the second half and had number of opportunities to take the lead. The best chance came from a Jone  cross that found Emily Nicholson all alone on the far post, her one timer just went by the post. Langara would get couple of good quality chances before Jones in the 85th minute beat couple of defenders and fired a shot that handcuffed the Falcons keeper to give the Mariner's the lead.
VIU would not give up any more chances to the Falcons to open the season with a big win

"We didn't play our best game today,  a bit nervous but we stuck with it mentally and pulled it off. Langara is a very good team and well coached so we are happy to get the three points. Shelby Walker came up big when we needed her and the defense played a solid game. Jess Burma was our MVP today playing out of position at center back and Sam Rodgers also had a very good game and Rachel is going to be handful for any defense.
