Saturday the VIU Mariners scored two late goals to defeat the Langara Falcons.

The Mariners playing without three starters took some time to settle in and get there game going. The Falcons lead at half time on an early goal after a Falcon player was taken down in the penalty area.

The game lacked any flow and the Mariners couldn’t seem to get their game going as there were constant stoppages.

The second have was much better with the Mariners putting more pressure on the Langara backline, but it wasn’t until 75 minutes in that the Mariners were able to get on the score board. Blaze Roberts came on late in the game and he didn’t take long to make an impact, Jordan DeGraaf made a great run into the penalty are then slipped the ball to Roberts who made no mistake. It was Roberts that put the Mariners up by one scoring a header off a Matt Mehrassa throw in. The Mariners were pleased with the win put lost a big part of their team when Chris Merriman had to leave the game with a broken leg after a reckless tackle by a Falcon player. The loss of Merriman is more than just on the field but his leadership off the field as well.

Sunday was senior’s day with the Mariners honouring five players that would be playing their last home game in a Mariners uniform. The five fifth year players were (Captain) Matt Mehrassa, (Center back) Ben Leggett, (Midfielder) Brant Losch, (R Back) Davis Stupich and (L Back) Matt Rigden. The Mariners fourth year goalkeeper Daniel Mercier was also honoured as a graduating player.

Sunday the Mariners were defiantly motivated and came out ready to play against the Quest Kermodes. The Kermodes found themselves on their heels early in the game as the Mariners pressed to score an early goal and it wasn’t too long before Stephen Ewashko put the Mariners up by one, Ewashko finished off a cross from outside midfielder Romaie Martin. The Mariners didn’t stop there; it was Ewashko scoring one more and Blaze Roberts picking up where he left off Saturday scoring two goals of his own. The half time score had the Mariners up by four.

The second half the Mariners continued to play well and it was Jordan DeGraaf that scored the Mariners lone goal to help them to a 5-0 win. Robbie Cochrane and Dan Mercier shared duties in net to get the shutout.

“I was glad to see the players play so well this weekend, we had to make some adjustments with the loss of Center back Dan Cato for both games, Chris Merriman out Sunday with a broken leg and Stephen Ewashko sitting out Saturday to nurse an injury. I felt all our senior players came out to play and was glad to see them get the 6 points in their last two home games.
