Eliminated from playoffs

October 14th, 2012

With only two games remaining in league play the VIU women’s soccer team has been eliminated from post season play.

Saturday, Oct 13th

VIU 0, Kwantlen 0

Mariners were looking to get three points and get back into a playoff position against a Kwantlen team that also needed points to stay in the hunt for one of the four playoff spots. VIU started strong and almost took the lead in the 5th minute when a Emma Johansson shot sailed just wide. Caity Genereaux 10 minutes later had a quality chance when Johansson flicked a through ball that sent Genereaux alone on net but a Kwantlen defender blocked the shot.  The  best chance of the half  was   on Emily Nicholson’s shot which was stopped by the Eagles keeper but the rebound fell to Sharin Kang who's header was stopped on the goal line by a diving defender, the defenders attempt to clear hit Kang's shins and this time the keeper stopped it on the goal line. Sam Rodgers twice on free kicks would nearly score, just barely missing the top corner of the net. 0-0 at the half

Mariner's would continue to pressure Kwantlen which created chance after chance, in the 55th minute Rebecca Williams low shot was stopped by the keeper, Rachel Jones got to the rebound which was also stopped by the keeper. VIU would continue to attack and almost won the game in the 90 minute when a Sam Rodgers free kick from 30 yards would hit the post and stay out, VIU would take 21 shots to 3 for Kwantlen with 12 of those Mariner shots hitting the net.

"We played a great game, right from the start we dictated and controlled the match, Centerback Sam Rodgers was great today she alone could have had 2 or 3 goals, that last shot was a rocket, another centimeter it would have hit the post and gone in"

Douglas 1, VIU 0

Mariners now needing a win to stay in the playoff race would get a number of quality chances in the first half but it would be Douglas who would get on the scoreboard first in the 30th minute. A Royals cross was headed by a forward, which would hit one of the players in front and redirect into the net.

VIU would spend almost all of the second half in Douglas end, Emma Johansson would hit the post on a shot from 20 yards out, freshman Jillian Kelly was sent away on a breakaway by Emily Nicholson but the ball would get away from her and the keeper scooped it up.

"For the second game of the weekend we dominated from start to finish but were very unlucky, Emily Nicholson was by far the best player on the pitch today, for a small player she won every head ball, every 50/50 ball and created a lot for us offensively, our defense again played great not giving anything up. Jessie Weninger was also dangerous, great to see Jessie getting back to that level after missing most of last year with ACL injury. We have a young team that is going to get better and better"
