MARINER BADMINTON UPDATE

October 21, 2012

VIU Mariner Badminton competed this past weekend in the first of the League tournaments, hosted by Thompson Rivers University. With a rebuilding year last year, the Mariners looked to come out strong in the season opener. After falling to host TRU in a closely contested first round, the Mariners rebounded with a big win over last year’s 2nd place finishers Kwantlen Polytechnical University. Unfortunately, the Mariners came up short on 3-2 finishes in the final 2 rounds.

Heading into the individual play  on the second day, VIU looked to team co-captains, Pat Thompson and Zack Yim for leadership. With the men’s events stacked with national team and international players, Thompson battled through many tough men’s singles matches, with some big wins, and eventually finishing 6th  out of 10 competitors. Yim mentored freshman player Connor White in the mens doubles, with the team showing growth as play progressed.

On the women’s side of the draw, VIU had a lot of success. Newcomers Melissa Liew of Winnipeg, and Eunice Chan of Victoria, both had strong first outings, with Chan finishing 2nd in the women’s singles behind internationally ranked veteran Douglas player RuiLin Huang. The highlight of the tournament was the women’s doubles final where Chan and Liew teamed up against Douglas College’s Huang and Charmaine Leung. Although the Mariner duo lost the final in 3 close games, they took a game in the set, handing Huang her first loss in 5 years within the PacWest conference.  Liew and Thompson partnered in the mixed doubles finishing 6th in  the strongest field in conference history.

Other highlights included the play of 3rd year athlete Jordan Bartulabac in the women’s doubles, the battling play of 2nd year player Corentin Denis, and a gutsy performance of freshman Thomas Spencer and 2nd year player John Foster in the men’s doubles. 2nd year players Lucy Bonner & Lindsay Ward rounded out the Mariner squad, contributing to a great overall team effort.

The Mariner badminton team resumes league play on Saturday, November 3rd and Sunday, November 4th at VIU.  Action will run 9am through 5pm both days --- Come on out to support your Mariner team and to see some of the top players in Canada compete.
