Men's Soccer advance to playoffs

October 21st, 2012

VIU comes away with two ties over the weekend.

Saturday the VIU Mariners men’s soccer team took on UBCO Heat in Kelowna, Mateo Kostering and AJ Kambere combined for a goal in the first half to give the Mariners the lead. Kambere had made a great run down the right side and put a hard cross in for the on running Kostering and he made no mistake. The Mariners played a good first half and had a couple chances to increase their lead but it was not to be, the half time score remained 1-0 for the Mariners. The 2nd half was back and forth with Mariners goal keeper Dan Mercier called on to make some good saves for the Mariners but it was in injury time that the Heat was able to tie the score 1-1 when Dylan Abbott found himself unmarked and put a shot past the Mariner Keeper. The game ended tie, a fair result for the way the game was played by both teams. Ben Leggett was singled out for having a strong game for the Mariners and showing good leadership.

Sunday the Mariners traveled to Kamloops to take on the TRU Wolfpack, the Mariners had the luxury of being able to sit some of their top players as they had wrapped up their 2nd place finish into the Provincials. The Wolfpack also played cautiously knowing they had a place in the provincials as well, they didn’t want to take any cards and have players forced to sit at the championships. The first half ended in a 0-0 tie as both team created some opportunities but both keepers were equal to the task.

The Pack went up by one on a penalty shot by Peter Luncar after a Wolfpack striker was taken down by the mariner’s keeper, Robbie Cochrane. It was Jordan Degraff getting the Mariners on the board after goalkeeper Robbie Cochrane knocked a ball deep into TRU’s end and Drissa Bouare flicked the ball on to Degraff and he had no problem finishing his opportunity. The final score 1-1 and both teams will now prepare to play each other in the first round of the Provincial Championships this coming weekend. Jamie Taylor, Robbie Cochrane and Brant Losch were players that had good performances for the Mariners.

VIU’s Davis Stupich was playing his last League game in the PacWest against the TRU Wolfpack a team Stupich had started with 5 years ago.
