This past weekend, Mariner badminton hosted 4 other colleges and universities at the VIU gym, showcasing some of the best badminton in Canada. The Mariner team continued to show improvement with new and veteran team members alike finishing higher in the standings.

At the end of Saturday’s team play, the Mariner team finished in a 3-way tie for 2nd place, having defeated both Thompson Rivers University and Kwantlen Polytechnical University. However, using the league tie-breaking procedure, VIU had to settle for a 4th place finish.

Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday focused on individual event play, where VIU had some stellar finishes. First year athletes Melissa Liew of Winnipeg and Eunice Chan of Victoria finished 2nd and 3rd respectively in the Women’s Singles. Liew and Chan then teamed up for women’s doubles where they finished in second place. 4th year player Pat Thompson, finished 3rd in the men’s singles, besting his 6th place finish in the first tournament of the season just two weeks prior. Thompson and 5th year man Zack Yim paired up for a 5th place finish in an incredibly tough men’s doubles event.

Other highlights of the weekend came from the surging improvement of first year athletes Thomas Spencer and Connor White. Spencer had some gritty performances in men’s singles while White showed a good understanding of tactics and quick racquet skills in his men’s doubles events. 3rd year student Jordan Bartulabac has shown marked improvement in her play this year, teaming with Eunice Chan in some impressive women’s doubles wins. Melissa Liew and Zack Yim performed impressively mixed doubles in the team events. Other contributions came from Lindsay Ward, Corentin Dennis, John Foster, Nicole Greene and Lucy Bonar.

Mariner badminton next sees competitive action the weekend of January 4-6, 2013 when they compete in the Honolulu Open prior to resuming league play January 19th and 20th at Douglas College.
