Mariners continue to best Avalanche

The Vancouver Island University Mariners volleyball teams continued their winning form against College of the Rockies on Friday night and wrapped up first semester play.

The men's (9-3; 29: 17) and women's (10-2; 31: 6) Mariners volleyball teams both defeated the Avalanche by a score of 3-0 in PacWest play at VIU on Friday, following up their Thursday victories against COTR.

Both teams are locked in a battle for first-place in PacWest league standings.

PacWest athlete of the week Tory Zaytsoff was dominant with 12 kills, eight digs and a serving ace for the Mariners men as the men won their sets (25: 22; 25: 16; 25: 22)

Zach Grigg had nine kills while Collett Dillon, who had seven, added two serving aces.

The Avalanche men (5-5; 18: 19) were led by Curtis Stockton, who had eight kills.

The women (25: 20; 25: 20; 25: 19) capitalized on a struggling Avalanche (2-8; 9: 25) squad.

Marlie Temple had three serving aces and added five kills and a dig.

The Mariners women were led in kills by Leanna Gildersleeve, who had nine, and Tylar Turnbull with eight.

Paige Wiebe and Alyssa Wolf shared in the offensive effort with seven kills.

On defence Gildersleeve and Wolf had four digs each.

Both teams return to action Jan. 4 against the Capilano Blues with back-to-back road games.
