A fourth-quarter comeback escaped the Vancouver Island Mariners men's basketball team on Saturday.
The men (6-2) fell in an upset 76-74 to the Kwantlen Eagles (35) in PacWest basketball play at VIU on Saturday during their last game of 2012. The women (54) put up back-to-back victories by defeating the Eagles 61-52.
A shot for the tying points at the buzzer for the Mariners men bounced off the rim, ending a bitter fourth-quarter battle between the two teams. Point guard Brandon Jones led the way for VIU with 18 points. He had seven field goals and made four of six free throws. Jones was also the team's rebound leader, tying with Harrison Stupich's eight.
Connor Billett drained three of seven three-point attempts and had 13 points. Jon Bethell had two three-pointers and eight points. Six-foot-six big man Tyler Olsen had nine points and seven rebounds.
The Mariners men return to action in the new year with a game against the Camosun Chargers, Jan. 4 at VIU. That game is scheduled for 8 p.m.
The Mariners women secured their fifth victory of the season to pull their record above the .500 mark on Saturday. The Eagles (4-5) and VIU had been locked in a tie for fourth place in PacWest women's basketball standings.
The top offence for the women was a joint effort between Heather McCarthy, who had 14 points, and Jocelyn Jones who put up 13.
McCarthy scored from all areas of the court by draining four field goals and two three-pointers. She also had eight rebounds.
Jones was fierce from the outside, striking with three three-pointers. She added four free throws and six rebounds.
Shayna Worthington had a team-high nine rebounds, as well as 10 points on field goals. Jamie MacFarlane has nine points.
The women also return to action Jan. 4 with a game against Camosun at VIU. Their match is at 6 p.m.
