Mariners dominate UFV

The Vancouver Island University Mariners women's volleyball team went into the Christmas break in style, sweeping the top ranked team in the country. The Mariners followed up their 3-0 (25-19, 25-13, 25-17) win over the University of Fraser Valley Cascades on Friday with another 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-21) win on Saturday, to take over first place in the Pacific Western Athletic Association.

Dillon Collett has been named CCAA Player of the Month !! Dillon Collett, VIU Mariners, 5th year, Right side attacker has put together a number of huge weekends statistically as well as with his ability to lead on and off the court this season. Dillon has been able to use his 5 years of PACWEST volleyball experience to put together some fabulous all round matches over the season thus far. He has been an extremely valuable asset for the Mariners on both sides of the ball this Season.

VIU Basketball continues to dominate

Vancouver Island University's basketball teams can't be beaten, and what's more, they seem to be getting better. The VIU Mariners men's and women't b-ball squads were both big winners against the Camosun Chargers on Friday in the Vancouver Island University gym. The M's women defeated the Chargers 56-42 and then the Mariners men hammered Camo 93-51.

Volleyball Weekend

After a solid couple weekends on the road the VIU Volleyball teams are back home for the final weekend of action before the Xmas exam/holiday break. Last weekend the Mariner men split against Douglas and the women won 3-0 in both matches. This weekend will be a test for the women's team as UFV is undefeated at 12-0 and VIU is 10-2, losing both matches to UFV earlier in the month. The VIU Men won both previous matches versus UFV !! More details to come ...later in week.

VIU Badminton produces on home court

Nov 23-24 VIU Mariner Badminton was at home and the local family and friends were treated to some top-notch badminton. In the team event the Mariners missed beating Kwantlen Polytechnic and moving to third position by just a few points. Mariners Melissa Liew took the women’s singles easily as did Pat Thompson in the mens singles. Graydon Robb and Connor White were so close, but lost their mens doubles match this time out — but VIU will look to reverse that they next time they meet Kwantlen at the end of January.

Mariners down a setter

Things were finally looking up for the Vancouver Island University Mariners men's volleyball team - that is until the final 15 minutes of their practice on Wednesday. The last time they were in action, they completed their first weekend sweep of the Pacific Western Athletic Associations season, taking down the University of Fraser Valley Cascades (4-6; 16:23). VIU (4-6; 19:21) was off this past weekend with a bye and were looking good through practice heading into their two game set at Douglas College (5-5; 21:21) on Friday and Saturday.

Fortin Centre of attention

Fortin the centre of attention Third-year forward has stepped into leadership role with the VIU Mariners As a centre, Jason Fortin is undersized, but he has played a big game so far this year for the Vancouver Island University Mariners men's basketball team. The third-year forward out of Dover Bay Secondary School only measures in at six-foot-four in a position often dominated by players as much as eight inches taller than Fortin.
