Tyler/Paige - PACWEST Athletes of the week

January 29th, 2013

This past weekend the VIU Mariners took on a very strong Columbia Bible College Bearcats squad. The two teams ...had met earlier in the year with CBC beating the Mariners in 3 straight sets. The Bearcats have arguably two of the best Power hitters in the PACWEST. The Mariners needed to play some of their best volleyball of the season if they hoped to gain 6 points. That was the case both Friday and Saturday. The VIU Mariners were led by the strong play of Paige Wiebe who was matched up against the Bearcat’s strong outside hitters.
On Friday, Paige shut down the Bearcats outside hitters right off the bat. She tallied 2 stuff blocks and another 5 block continues. She recorded 8 digs defensively. On the offensive side of the game Paige led the Mariners with 10 kills, 2 blocks, and 1 ace in 3 straight sets. On Saturday, Paige improved on her offensive play recording 11 kills, and 1 ace and chipped in 5 digs again in only 3 sets. In total, over the 6 sets this weekend, Paige recorded 21 kills, 2 blocks, 2 aces and 13 digs.

The VIU Mariners entered this past weekend 4 points behind the league leading Langara Falcons. With games agains...t CBC and Kwantlen, Tyler Olsen came up big. The 6’ 6” fifth year forward from Fanny Bay, BC, Olsen helped his team to two very important wins this weekend.
On Friday night vs CBC, Olsen scored 19 points had 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks and a steal while sitting the entire fourth quarter. He followed up Friday’s performance with a career high 32 points and added 7 rebounds and 4 steals. 19 of the points came in the second half to help extend the Mariners 3 point half time lead to 22.
Both victories helped VIU stay on pace, 4 points behind the Falcons in the league standings. Next up for the Mariners is a road trip to Douglas and Langara College’s where they hope to close the gap in the standings.
