Mariners beat Royals, lose to Falcons

The Vancouver Island University Mariner's men's basketball team split their weekend road trip to the mainland, beating the Douglas College Royals (7-10) 7947 on Friday and losing 83-76 to the first place Langara Falcons (16-1) on Saturday.

It could have been a weekend sweep had it not been for costly errors and poor execution in Saturday's game against the Falcons, as VIU (13-4) went just 12of-26 from the free throw line.

Still head coach Matt Kuzmin-ski was happy with the effort from his players.

"Saturday we played well enough to win, but there were just some key things that didn't allow us to get the 'W,'" he said.

Veteran guard Brandon Jones led the Mariners in scoring on Friday with 31 points while Harrison Stupich added 15, including four-three pointers.

On Saturday, Jones had a team-high 28 points while Clayton Billett had 15 and Jason McKee had 12.

But Jones' efforts were tainted on Saturday as costly mistakes in the second half hurt VIU down the stretch.

"Especially Friday night he shot well and he shot well from the three on Saturday, but there were some areas he definitely could have been better," said Kuzminski. "He lost his composure a little bit in the third and ended up picking up a technical foul and that's when the game swung. He was aggressive and scored the ball well for us, but there's some improvements to be made."

The Mariners are on the road again next weekend to play the Quest Kermodes on Friday at 8 p.m. and then the Capilano Blues on Saturday at 3 p.m.

HOOP NOTES - The VIU women (11-6) also split, losing 4035 to the Royals (11-6) on Friday but beating the Falcons (5-12) 67-58 on Saturday.
