Badminton update

VIU Mariner badminton finished strong at provincials in Coquitlam this weekend.  In the team event the squad was able to defeat the TRU team to move up one place in the overall rankings.  The match-up has gone back and forth this season but Saturday saw VIU taking the women's singles with Melissa Liew, 5th year player Zack Yim was on the court for his last games as a mariner and showed his veteran skills with second year Corentin Denis to bring home the mens doubles in two straight games.  Thomas Spencer, a first year athlete who has improved tremendously could not take the mens singles to TRU strongest player.  Likewise the greater experience of the TRU womens doubles team was too much for mariners Lucy Bonar and Nicole Greene and the match was tied at 2-2.   Jordan Bartulabac teamed with Pat Thompson in a mixed doubles battle for the tie-breaking match.  Both teams fought nerves initially with everything riding on the match and the score see-sawed through the first two games of the battle.  At the turn it was 11-10 in the third game when Jordan and Pat switched gears.  It was fabulous to see Jordan, a third year player, take control of the net and swing the tide of the game.

Sunday was the critical day as individual events played off for provincial medals and qualifying berths at Nationals.  Thomas Spencer and Connor White competed in the extremely strong mens doubles event for a fourth place finish.  These are two first years players to keep your eye on with the tremendous improvement they are shown this season.  Jordan and Lucy took 4th in the womens doubles while Zack and Nicole took on the mixed teams with a 4th place finish.  Melissa Liew qualified for nationals with a silver medal in the womens singles losing only to the 5th year powerhouse RuiLin Huang who has won CCAA Nationals four times.  Pat Thompson took silver in mens singles so will also head for nationals but his is a story that started a full year ago when he decided middle of the pack was not enough.  He set a goal to go to Nationals and took on a new attitude to his training.  Over the summer he ran the dunes near his home in Summerside PEI and came back to VIU in the best shape of his university career by far.  Throughout the season he took care of all the 'pieces', conditioning, strength training, technical skills, nutrition and mental training.  Pat has been the most committed athlete this season and certainly earned his trip to nationals in preparation and on the courts this weekend where he played a quick, powerful and consistent game.

The badminton mariners would like to thank the athletic department and Curtis at Over the Hurdle for their support in the conditioning part of our training and we now look forward to strong results from Melissa and Pat at CCAA nationals next week
