Playing the first game of the pre season, Mariners came out flat to start the game, Douglas had a lot of possession in the early going but didn't really create any real good scoring chances. VIU got more engaged in the match and almost went ahead when Emma Johannson's shot from 30 yards hit the crossbar. Mariner's would take the lead on a well executed corner kick, Emma Johansson passed to Rachel Jones whose cross found freshman Katie Rodgers in front of the net, Rodgers made no mistake for her first goal as a Mariner. Freshman Kimberly Cardwell had a chance to add to the lead after she stripped the Douglas defender of the ball and went on a breakaway,  but was denied by well timed tackle by a Royals defender. Douglas was awarded a penalty shot just before halftime but VIU Freshman keeper Carly Jeffrey would make a great diving save.

At the start of the second half Douglas would get a real good chance requiring another VIU Freshman keeper Katherine Ross to make a brave save. VIU would create a number real good scoring chances but couldn't find the back of the net, with Kaylee Dodds and Jessie Weninger had the best chances.

"We came out a bit slow but we didn't really give them anything, after we settled down I thought we did a lot of good things, we created a lot of chances and defended very well. I thought when we had Jessie and Kaylee up top they created a lot of havoc for their defenders. We got all 22 players in the game, that took away from the flow of the game a bit, Douglas is a much improved team so this is a good start for us"
