Women's soccer drops two on the road

September 8th, 2013

Saturday

UBCO 2, VIU 1

Sunday

TRU 3, VIU 1

Playing against the top two teams from a season ago the Mariners played two good games but came away without a point in their last trip to the interior. Saturday both teams started slow with neither team creating any until the 36th minute, UBCO had free kick from 40 yards out, the cross was headed home by a Heat player to make it 1-0, shorty after the goal the mariners started to take over the game and could have tied it when Caity Genereaux cross found a wide open Carli Rey in front of the net, Rey's one timer was just wide.

The Mariners would eventually be awarded for their continuous pressure when Shelby Walker free kick from 45 yards out found the top corner of the net at the 61st minute mark. In the 67th minute UBCO was warded a PK for hand ball, they would convert to make it 2-1, VIU would continue to press UBCO and we had two glorious chances by Rachel Jones to tie it, she found herself all alone 12 yards in front of the net but her shot sailed over the net.

Sunday VIU took on two time defending champs TRU Wolfpack, the Mariners started the game strong but were caught on the counter in the 20th minute. A breakaway by Alana Bekkering was slotted into the corner of the net. She would get her second on a shot from 30 yards that found the top corner. Caity Genereaux and Carli Rey had scoring chances to cut into the lead before halftime, but were denied.

TRU would make it 3-0,  but VIU would respond quickly when a Emma Johannson cross found Kaylee Dodds, who headed the ball past the diving TRU keeper.  Dodds had couple more opportunities to score,  but her shots were blocked. Emma Johannson had one last chance for VIU.

"We played a real good game on Saturday, the PK was unfortunate, Rachel was real good today, she's really maturing as a player, she went head on against one of the top mid fielders in the league and stood her own. Against TRU we gave Alana too much space and shae took advantage of it, even though we were two down at the half the players really believed we were not out of it and took the game to TRU for most of the second half. TRU is a very good team. Zoe Grace had a fantastic game for us, we had our whole back line out due to injuries and that makes it tough,  but the girls that were slotted in there did a real nice job. Now we come home for 7 of the next 8, huge weekend next week against Langara and Quest"
