Summary

On Saturday,  playing a very talented and well coached Langara team the Mariners came out strong by taking the game to the visiting Falcons. VIU would get couple of early chances to score from the strong play of Kaylee Dodds and Moira Brown, it would stay deadlocked until a brilliant play from Carli Rey who drilled around two defenders and fired a rocket that beat the Langara keeper at the far post midway through the first half. At the stroke of halftime it looked like Rey would get her second on a shot from 25 yards out but the linesman on the far side called offside on another VIU player.

Second half the Falcons came out strong but the Mariners stood their ground until the 82nd minute when Langara would tie it up at 1 apiece. VIU would get the last chance of the match in injury time but were denied by Langara defenders.

Sunday's game vs the undefeated Quest, VIU came out of the gate firing on all cylinders. Kaylee Dodds would get her second of the season from a brilliant corner kick by Jillian Kelly at the 8 minute mark. 10 minutes later VIU almost got a second again off another corner kick from Kelly, Katie Rodgers shot was heading into the top corner of the net when from nowhere a flying Quest goalie got her fingertips to deflect the ball wide.

Emma Johannson would make it 2-0 for VIU in the 60th minute on a great individual effort, she blasted a shot from 20 yards out that gave Quest no chance. Quest would get one back in the 79th minute on a free kick but the Mariners would tighten up defensively and run out the clock to take the win.

"It would have been nice to get all six points this weekend but we are happy with the four. These were two very good teams we played, we have a lot of injuries but players we slotted in really stepped up. Carly Rey is a great player, she had offers to go play with CIS programs but decided to stay with us. Sunday Carli and Kaylee Dodds were just fantastic and a big reason for our win. Quest only had couple shots on goal in the game and no real quality chances until the goal. I thought all weekend Jess Burma and rest of the defenders were awesome, Shelby Walker has taken her game to the next level, our focus now turns to next weekend against Kwantlen and Douglas"
