VIU Badminton –-- Oct 20 at Douglas College (Coquitlam)

Mariner Badminton Team was in action this weekend at Coquitlam for the first tournament of PacWest 2013-2014 season.  The team event rounds on Day One were closely fought with the Mariners losing 3-2 to both Kwantlen Polytechnic and Thompson Rivers University.  In each case VIU had 2 chances to take the round and lost very close 3 game matches.  Langara College defeated Douglas College in the Team event to take first.

The Individual events on Day Two were a different matter with great results from the veterans and rookies alike.  Highlights include: Mens Singles which had first year athlete Graydon Robb finishing 3rd and fifth year Pat Thompson 4th ; this is VIU’s strongest results in the mens singles in at least a decade in a PacWest league that gets stronger every year.   This year the womens side has also stepped up the caliber and second year athlete Melissa Liew played strong for a 2nd place finish in Womens Singles.  The Mixed Doubles draw was the most power loaded event of the weekend and VIU athletes Graydon Robb and Melissa Liew battled in the intense competition to finish 4th  with Pat Thompson and Jordan Bartulabac also finishing strong at 6th.  Connor White and John Foster won the C pool in mens doubles and Darby Walker won the C Womens Singles.   Well done Mariners!

Next action for the squad is Nov 23-24 at VIU gym.  Come out and see your VIU Mariners compete with the top athletes in Canadian University Badminton.
