PACWEST Week 07 – October 20, 2013

Men’s Soccer Athlete of the Week

Farhad Abdulgani (Vancouver Island University)

Farhad Abdulgani was the Mariner’s top recruit this season, is in his 2nd year of eligibility.  Originally from Norway, Abdulgani spent his first year at S.F.U. in 2012.  He then transferred to VIU.  Entering the final week of league play, the Mariner’s were tied with UBCO for the 4th and final playoff spot.  All that VIU needed to do was keep pace with UBCO and they had the league tie-breaker.  The Mariners were on the road this weekend and travelled to Surrey and Coquitlam to take on the Kwantlen Eagles and Douglas Royals.

Saturday afternoon, Mariners Captain Abdulagani was outstanding against the Kwantlan.  He was all over the park trying to lead the young Mariners on to a win and get the points they needed for that last playoff spot. Abdulgani helped create a number of scoring opportunities and although the Mariners were not able to finish these chances, Abdulgani didn't stop pushing offensively and working defensively.   Early in the 2nd half, off a free kick, the Eagles took the lead.  This did not stop Abdulgani from continuing to lead his team. His hard work almost paid off when the Mariners were awarded a penalty shot, but after some confusion the PK was called back. The game ended in a 1-0 loss to the Mariners but the young players were inspired by the work rate of Abdulgani.  With UBCO losing 2-0 to Langara, the Mariners were still in the driver’s seat. All they needed was a win against Douglas to secure the playoff spot.

Sunday afternoon VIU was faced with a must win situation against the Royals, a team that the Mariners had only beating once in the last five years.  Abdulgani once again came to play and showed that top players play their best games when everything is on the line.  Abdulgani scored three goals to lead his Mariners to 4-0 win and a ticket to the PACWEST Provincial Championships. The SFU transfer player scored two of his goals on world class free kicks, both shots left the Douglas keeper standing watch the ball go into the top corners and his third was on some top level individual skill, beating two defenders with one move and volleying  the ball into the back of the net.

Abdulgani's performance in an absolute must win on the last game of the year left VIU tied with UBCO on points but advance because of the teams record head to head.
