 The VIU Mariners came up against a very strong Capilano Blues squad. The Blues pushed the Mariners all weekend both offensively and defensively. The Mariner's were able to break through and take both day’s matches in 4 because of the strong defensive and offensive play from Ashley Van Acken, a third year middle who led her team with her fiery play.
On Friday night, Van Acken was a dominating force on recording 10 kills, and 2 aces. Defensively she recorded 8 blocks and 4 digs. VIU would defeat Capilano 3-1 with set scores of 24-26, 25-21, 25-20, 25-14.
On Saturday, Van Acken kept up the strong play chipping in another 7 kills, 4 blocks 2 aces and 3 digs. In match 2 of the weekend series, VIU once again came out with the victory defeating Capilano with an identical 3-1 score. Set scores were 25-19, 14-25, 25-15, 25-19.

Over the weekend, Van Acken’s totals were an impressive 17 kills, 12 blocks, 4 aces and 7 digs. These stats are very impressive for a middle in the women's conference. “Ashley's leadership and determination to take the match into her own hands are the main reason she should be considered for the Athlete of the week.” Stated coach Hyde
