VIU wins all four PACWEST Athletes of the week!

PACWEST Week 09 – November 3, 2013

Men’s Volleyball Athlete of the Week

Dillon Collett (Vancouver Island University)

Dillon Collett, VIU's 5th year, right side attacker from Cloverdale, put together another big weekend for his Mariners against the CBC Bearcats.  Collett showed his whole arsenal of shots putting together another awesome weekend on both sides of the ball, leading the Mariners in kills and digs.  Collett also combined for 46 total offensive points and 21 digs to help the Mariners complete a quality split weekend against a strong veteran CBC squad.

During Friday night’s match, the Mariners played their best match of the season thus far and Collett’s play was a big reason for this performance.  He put together a very well rounded performance with 15 kills, 6 digs, 2 blocks and a services ace.  His combined efforts both defensively, offensively and his positive on court veteran leadership helped lead the Mariners in a 3-0 victory at VIU.

On Saturday, Collett put together an outstanding performance both offensively and defensively. He finished the evening with 24 kills, 15 digs, 3 blocks and a service ace in the 5 set battle. Collett’s game continues to grow on and off the court this season putting forth maximal effort every night he puts on the Mariner jersey.

The Mariners and Collett travel to the Fraser Valley next weekend to take on the UFV Cascades.

PACWEST Week 09 – November 3, 2013

Women’s Volleyball Athlete of the Week

Tylar Turnbull (Vancouver Island University)

This Past weekend the VIU Mariners took on the CBC Bearcats.  It was the first time the teams met up since the Bearcats bounced the Mariners out of the Nationals for only the 2nd time in 18 years.  The weekend matches were dictated all weekend by the Mariner middle offence.  Tylar Turnbull, 3rd year Middle from Port Coquitlam, led the team offensively all weekend.

Turnbull was a dominant factor in the previous weekend’s matches vs Capilano as well and carried on her strong play this past weekend. On Friday night, Tunbull led the Mariners with 7 kills, 1 block and 1 ace in only 3 sets of play in a 3-0 home win with set scores of 25-16, 25-14, 25-22.

On Saturday, she led the powerful VIU offence for the second day in a row scoring 11 kills, 2 blocks and 2 digs again in only 3 sets of play. VIU would win 25-21, 25-22, 25-15.

Turnbull’s total weekend stats were 18 kills, 3 blocks, 1 ace and 2 digs. For a middle in the Women’s conference these are exceptional stats. Her total stats from last weekend vs Capilano (23 kills, 8 blocks, 1 ace and 2 digs) and her stats this weekend demonstrate a consistency in her play. As coach Hyde stated, “Tylar has been a key to the Mariners success all season.”

PACWEST Week 09 – November 3, 2013

Men’s Basketball Athlete of the Week

Brandon Jones (Vancouver Island University)

After a successful 2012-13 campaign leading to a CCAA National Championship Gold Medal, the 4th year guard from Portland, Oregon is back for another year at VIU.  This year’s men’s basketball season opener was the Island Rivalry with Camosun College on Saturday night in Victoria.

Brandon Jones led the charge vs the Chargers on Saturday.  Jones was very focused from the start to the end of the game.  As a point guard, he had great balance between his scoring attack and getting the Mariners into offense.  Jones scored 32 points on a very efficient 13/21 (61.9%) shooting including 4/8 from 3 point range.  Jones would also make 2/4 from the free throw line.  The Mariners would take the game 77-66 to open up the 2013-14 PACWEST season.

PACWEST Week 09 – November 3, 2013

Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week

Shayna Worthington (Vancouver Island University)

After a disappointing showing at the 2012-13 National Championships, Shayna Worthington and the Mariners were eager to start the 2013-14 campaign off on the right foot.  Opening night for the 5th year forward was in her home town of Victoria to take on the Camosun College Chargers.  The 6’ 1”, 2012-13 first team league all-star and academic all-Canadian, did not disappoint as she lead the Mariners to victory.

Saturday night, in another Island Rivalry game, the Mariners spoiled Camosun’s home opener with a 57-43 road victory. Worthington scored 14 points, added 9 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals, blocked several shots and was awesome controlling the paint in the victory.  Worthington played an amazing 38 minutes.
