VIU Badminton produces on home court

November 26th, 2013

Nov 23-24 VIU Mariner Badminton was at home and the local family and friends were treated to some top-notch badminton.  In the team event the Mariners missed beating Kwantlen Polytechnic and moving to third position by just a few points.  Mariners Melissa Liew took the women’s singles easily as did Pat Thompson in the mens singles.  Graydon Robb and Connor White were so close, but lost their mens doubles match this time out — but VIU will look to reverse that they next time they meet Kwantlen at the end of January.

In individual events their were lots of highlights.  Graydon Robb played inspired badminton to take the Mens Singles A title and Pat Thompson was strong and steady for a 4th place finish in A.  This is VIU's strongest mens singles results ever.  Melissa Liew was also strong this weekend with a second place finish in women’s singles and fourth in doubles partnering Jordan Bartulabac.  The team has been working hard on court at Over the Hurdle to develop speed and power and several athletes saw the hard work pay off this weekend.  Jordan showed her new singles game with a first place in C event and Connor and Jessy Zheng took first in Mixed Doubles C

Next PACWEST Badminton Tournament is February  1-2 in Kamloops but over the holidays some of the team will be training in Florida, while Graydon Robb is playing the Alberta Elite - National circuit in mid Dec,  Pat Thompson is competing in the Maritime Open later in December
