PACWEST Women's Volleyball Athlete of the Week

Leanna Gildersleeve (Vancouver Island University)

The VIU Mariner Women's Volleyball team hosted the number 1 team in the country this past weekend. It was the battle of the 2012 National Champions (VIU) vs 2013 National Champions (UFV).  Just three short weeks ago, the Mariners made the trek to Abbotsford where the home UFV squad swept the weekend.  The Mariners were ready to put on a strong performance as they returned the favor as they swept the Cascades.

VIU won with a very balanced attack. As usual the Mariners were led by 5th year and 2012-13 CCAA All-Canadian, Leanna Gildersleeve.  Gildersleeve was strong in every aspect of the game from defense, serving offence and sheer leadership. Both days she passed a 2.6 and was the backbone to the Mariner's strong play which saw them take over #1 in the PACWEST with two dominant 3 set victories.  On Friday, Gildersleeve recorded 7 digs, 10 kills, 4 blocks, 3 aces for a total of 17 total offensive points in only 3 sets. Saturday she continued her strong play recording 9 digs and another 10 kills again in only 3 sets. Her weekend totals were 16 digs, 20 kills, 4 blocks, and 3 aces in only 6 sets.

PACWEST Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week

Shayna Worthington (Vancouver Island University)

Shayna Worthington is a 5th year forward from Claremont High School in Victoria.  The VIU Mariners made the trip to the lower mainland to take on the Douglas Royals and Langara Falcons.  Worthington continued her stellar play this past weekend on the road.

On Friday night, Worthington had 16 points, 6 rebounds, 4 blocks and 6 steals in over 37 minutes played in a 57-42 win over Douglas.

On Saturday, She had a double-double tallying 16 points, 16 rebounds, 2 blocks and 2 steals in a 63-53 win over Langara.  Worthington continues to be dominant for VIU.  "Shayna has been outstanding this season and has carried us on several occasions to victory.  She is a major reason we are 8-0" stated coach McWhinnie.
