PACWEST Men's Volleyball Athlete of the Week

Zach Grigg (Vancouver Island University)

Zach Grigg, VIU's 2nd Year Left Side started 2014 off right where he left off in 2013. He had an outstanding weekend against the Douglas College Royals. The Mariners’ left side attacker put together two great matches over the weekend at home to kick off the second semester. His ability to score throughout both matches help the Mariners earn a well deserved split over the weekend. Zach finished with a combined 43 total offensive points over the weekend.
During Friday night’s match, Zach put together a very strong offensive performance with 17 kills, 4 service aces, and a stuff block. Defensively he had 3 digs while passing an average of 2.35 as the Royals main serving target for the match. Zach’s combined efforts helped stabilize the Mariners’ serve reception in the tough five-set match.

On Saturday, Zach continued his solid play, both on offence and defence, in a win over the Royals. Zach put together even stronger statistical numbers on Saturday in the 3-2 Mariners victory. His offence continued to impress with 17 kills over the five sets. He also added 7 digs, 2 services aces and 2 blocks to complete his impressive weekend. Zach’s strong passing performance allowed the Mariners offence to run smoothly, which made life difficult on the Royals on the defensive side of the ball.
It was an excellent all-round team effort for the Mariners the weekend after a great experience in Mexico over the Christmas break in Baja California. The Mariners hope to continue their positive results this weekend when they host the Capilano Blues.
