Men's Volleyball Athlete of the Week

Diego Bustos (Vancouver Island University)

Diego Bustos, VIU's right side attacker had his biggest PACWEST weekend of his Mariner career against the Capilano University. Along with his great weekend, the Mariners were able to pull out two excellent victories over the Blues. He was an extremely valuable asset on both sides of the ball combining for 42 total offensive points and 8 digs to complete the weekend for the Mariners.

During Friday night’s match Bustos put together a very well rounded performance with 13 kills, 3 digs, 2 blocks and 3 service aces for the match. His efforts helped lead the Mariners to a convincing 3-0 victory over Capilano. His clutch play helped the Mariners to close out the 3rd set.

On Saturday, Bustos was an even bigger offensive and defensive impact for the Mariners. He fished the afternoon with 18 kills, 5 digs, 4 blocks and 2 service aces in the 5 set battle. His calming, on-court leadership and his well-rounded statistical numbers on Saturday was instrumental in leading the Mariners to the 3-2 victory.

With the CBC Bearcats sitting idle this past weekend, the Mariners two big victories over a strong Capilano team allowed Island team to close the gap in the standings. Although they have played two more matches, the Mariners find themselves tied for first place in the PACWEST with 20 points and a record of 10-8. After starting the 2013-14 PACWEST season at 1-5, they now find themselves among the top teams in the PACWEST.

This is the second time in two weeks of play where Leanna's stats were incredible and although did not receive last week's player of the week credit, she showed again this week that she is our best all-around player in the PACWEST” stated coach Hyde.

Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week

Jocelyn Jones (Vancouver Island University)

Jocelyn Jones is last year’s PACWEST playoff MVP and VIU’s Athlete of the year.  Jones had a huge weekend leading VIU to two big road wins.  VIU travelled to the coast to take on the Quest Kermodes in Squamish and then the Capilano Blues in North Vancouver.

On Friday, Jones had 32 points, including going 13/16 from the foul line, in a 73-70 comeback win against a very talented Quest team.  On Saturday, Jones played an unselfishly game, recording 7 points and numerous assists that were not recorded in a 64-45 win at Capilano.  Jones was outstanding defensively throughout the weekend and is a big reason for VIU’s 12-0 record.
