Vancouver Island University's Mariners basketball programs took home two medals from provincials, a silver for the men and a bronze for the women.

The Mariners men went head-to-head and against the Langara Falcons in the gold medal final on Saturday night, but came up just short and lost 90-84.

Last season, the Mariners also took silver at PacWest, but went on to win a national Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association title.

They will not have a chance to repeat this season, as the Pacific Western Athletic Association's Quest Kermodes will play host and thus receive a bye to the CCAA finals, at the expense of the league's secondplace finisher.

Nevertheless, the Mariners ensured that Canada's No. 1-ranked team in the CCAA would endure a tough battle in Saturday's final.

Brandon Jones fired on all cylinders for VIU and amassed 32 points, 13 total rebounds and three assists.

VIU's Harrison Stupich added 16 points while Clayton Billett struck for six assists.

Brody Greig led the way for Langara with 33 points, followed by Elliot Mason's 19.

Glen Ruby had 14 total rebounds for Langara.

Langara stormed out to an early 24-14 lead after the first quarter and extended the lead to 30-16 by the second.

VIU dug deep and exploded to 29 points in the second quarter, enough to take a 43-38 lead into half-time.

The third quarter saw VIU extend their advantage by a point, until a furious fourth quarter that saw a total 60 points scored by both sides.

Langara's 36 points to VIU's 24 in the final frame put the Falcons ahead and secured a berth at nationals for this season's CCAA powerhouse.

Langara (20-1) swept the regular season series against their PacWest brethren and only narrowly defeated the Mariners (16-5) in their final regular season matchup, 76-75.

The Falcons' Greig as well as the Mariners' Jones took home players of the game in the final.

Jones and teammate Billett were also named tournament allstars, while Greig claimed the tournament mvp title.

The 2014 CCAA national championships are being hosted by Quest University and are scheduled for March 12-15 in Squamish.
