Vancouver Island University's Mariners women's basketball team set the league ablaze this season, but one loss dashed their hopes at a provincial title.

The Mariners rebounded from a semi-final loss (50-47) to the Douglas College Royals on Saturday by claiming the bronze medal in a 51-43 victory over the Camosun Chargers.

VIU's Jocelyn Jones and Heather McCarthy combined for 12 points each in the win. Forward Jenna Carver had 11 total rebounds.

Shayna Worthington notched nine points and 10 total rebounds.

For the Chargers, it was Aija Salvador who led, with 12 points. Emily Frame had 12 total rebounds for Camosun.

When the PacWest's top two regular season teams met in the bronze medal final, it was the Chargers who stormed out to an early lead. Camosun handed VIU (20-1) its only loss of the campaign when the teams met for their final games of the regular season.

The Chargers struck for a 17-7 advantage in the first quarter, before VIU began to methodically pick away at the Camosun lead. By half-time Camosun enjoyed a 27-20 lead, but their offence would dry up to just 16 points through the second half.

VIU commanded the third quarter, scoring 17 points to Camosun's eight and the Mariners entered the final frame with a 37-35 score narrowly in their favour.

The Mariners built on their lead with a 14-8 fourth quarter.

Jones, who played a full 40 minutes in her final match as a Mariner, was named player of the game alongside the Chargers Elyse Matthews.

While the Mariners had eyes for a provincial championship, Saturday's bronze medal capped off a record-breaking season that saw VIU explode a long-standing wins record - 18 - with their near-perfect season.

VIU will wave goodbye to its core of Jones, Worthington, McCarthy, Erin Vekic and Alicia Grossi, who are all fifth-years.
