See ya at the Merle Logan Turf Field Saturday 1/3pm when we face Langara Falcons and Sunday 12/2pm when the Capilano Blues are in town ....

A great start to the 2014 as VIU Mariners defeated Quest in both the Women's and Men's games on Wednesday !!

Women match VIU -3, Quest -1

VIU, Zoe Grace, Moira Brown, Bronte Firzsimmons.

Quest, own goal.

VIU opened it's season against a very strong Quest team that finished second in league play and provincials. Quest came out strong and controlled most of the possession but the Mariners kept their poise defensively without giving up any quality chances. VIU in the 15th minute got on the board on a Zoe Grace laser from 30 yards. "Bronte made a brilliant run on the goal which caused a lot of panic in the box for Quest, Zoe's shot was picture perfect"

Halftime: VIU-1, Quest -0

The Mariners came out in the second half and controlled most of the play, creating number of opportunities, Moira Brown in the 59th made it 2-0 for VIU, Fitzsimmons stole the ball off the Quest keeper and setup an open Brown in front for the tap in to the empty net. Fitzsimmons made it 3-0 five minutes later on a penalty shot, Carli Rey was taken down in the box to setup the PK.

"I thought we stayed composed and patient against a very good team, defensively we were real good, Bronte was in on all our goals today and could've had couple more herself, we'll take this and move on to play another two very very good teams on the weekend"

The VIU Mariners Men's Soccer team came away with well deserved 2-1 win over Quest University Kermodes.  The Mariner men came out fast with players like Jordan Degraaf , Victor Blasco and Andres Algarin showing the pace and  skill of the Mariners. Blaze Roberts up top was a handful for the Kermodes back-line to deal with and it was Roberts putting the Mariners up 1-0 early after Blasco made a good run past a couple defenders and cut the ball back to the unmarked Roberts. Just 10 minutes later it was Jordan Degraaf giving the Mariners a two goal lead, Renan Robelatto flicked a ball on to DeGraaf and like Roberts he made no mistake. The team continued to pressure but late in the 1st half it was Quest's Max Tagesen that made the game interesting by jumping on a rebound and making the score 2-1 going into the 2nd half.

The 2nd half was a completely different game with both teams playing more physical and creating lots of stops and starts to the game,  no real flow to the game. The Kermodes had a number of chances in close but the Mariners backline led by (captain) Jeff Travis and Peter Cooper stayed strong to help goalkeeper Scott Brown and preserve the win. Mariners were not without their own chances on Quest keeper Sawyor Plato , Jordan Degraff and Blaze Roberts were both stopped by Sawyor, the best chance coming late when defender Aly Adeep was able to get up the park and find himself unmarked in front of the keeper but his shot was just over the bar.

Midfielder Jamie Taylor and outside back Mateo Kostering played strong games as did Keegan Lang

The game ended 2-1 , Mariners get the 3 points they wanted and will now prepare for this weekend’ s home openers against Langara College Falcons and Capilano University Blues.
