After a successful first week of PACWEST soccer action our Men's team is undefeated at 3-0 and the Women are 2-1.

This weekend the teams are playing at home again. Douglas Royals Saturday 1/3pm and Kwantlen Eagles Sunday 12/2pm.

Saturday Sept 6:

Langara 1, VIU 0

Sunday Sept 7:

VIU 3, Capilano 0

VIU for the second game in a row came out flat and needed a great save early on from keeper Shelby Walker to keep the game scoreless, Mariners started to get into the game midway through the first half, in the second half Mariners had more of the play, couple of excellent saves from Langara keeper kept the game tied 0-0, Langara would score the only goal of the game in the 89th minute in a great shot that found the top corner of the net. Mariners had one last chance in injury time, Bronte Fitzsimmons free kick from top of the box just sailed over the net. "We started the game slow but I thought we were real good for most of the second half, they took advantage of their only real good opportunity of the second half, Shelby was real good along with our whole back line, our first year players are playing like veterans"

Mariners came out on fire to start the match! Bronte Fitzsimmons had couple of real good chances, she fouled just outside the 18yard box, Fitzsimmons took the free kick and slotted it into top left corner to give VIU a lead in the 25th minute. Five minutes later the Mariners would increase their lead to two on a nice combination play by Fitzsimmons, freshman Ceilidh Glennie and freshman Maddy Dawson, Glennie played the ball down the wing to Dawson who calmly crossed the ball to an onrushing Carli Rey to tap it into the empty net.

Second half started the same as the first with the Mariners dominating the play, Kim Cardwell had a semi breakaway, Fitzsimmons on shot from top of the box, Samantha Rodgers and Cardwell on headers had real good chances to add to the lead before VIU would make it 3-0 on a goal from Moira Brown, it was setup by Fitzsimmons cross. "we played well today, had control of the match from opening kickoff, Bronte and Kaylee set the tone for us early, that free kick by Bronte was top notch, I thought our mid field play was excellent today with Sharin, Ceilidh, Carli and Maddy Dawson, Kim Cardwell came in and gave their defense something to think about, the defense was solid again, it was a tough last minute loss the day before but I thought we bounced back real strong, mentally this group is strong, we need to have a good week of training and prepare to play two tough teams in Douglas and Kwantlen next weekend at home"
