Great weekend for Soccer

September 21st, 2014

VIU 2, Langara 0

VIU 3, Capilano 1

Langara sitting one point ahead of the Mariners would face a determined VIU team. Bronte Fitzsimmons, Carli Rey would get the first of many early chances. Mariners would create number of quality chances but were unable to slot one into the net. It would stay scoreless at the half.

Second half VIU would take over the match, with chance after chance until a brilliant through ball from Fitzsimmons found a streaking Jessie Weninger to slot home Mariners first goal in the 65th minute. Fitzsimmons would make it 2-0 on a wicked shot from 30 yards that beat the Langara keeper. "We played a solid 90 minutes today, our midfield play was exceptional, the defense didn't really give them much and Bronte showed why she's a threat every time she touches the ball. Shelby Walker made a remarkable save late in the game to keep it 2-0 for us.

Sunday against Capilano VIU would get on the board when Fitzsimmons found the head of Kaylee Dodds on a pinpoint cross in the 23rd. Halftime score 1-0 VIU

Second half  Capilano was  rewarded for their hard work scoring in the 65th to tie it, the Mariners would respond and Jessie Weninger for the second day in a row would score the winner by slotting it home from just inside the box.  Fitzsimmons would make it 3-1 and seal the win.  Weninger would repay her by sending her on a breakaway, the Blues keeper would take her down resulting in a PK and a red card, Fitzsimmons would pick herself up to take the penalty and calmly slotted it in to seal the win. The two wins this weekend put Mariners in a tie for first place in league standings with Douglas College. The two teams square off next Saturday in Coquitlam. "We had a real strong first half, Capilano took it to us to start the second but we adjusted and responded well to their changes in formation and were deserving of the win. It's nice to be at the top of the standings but we have a long ways to go, lot of the teams are just behind us, we have some tough games coming up, but I like the mental state of this team"
